A fantastic season finale needs to satisfy all of the season preceding it has set up while laying a groundwork of its own for the road ahead. “From the Gallows,” the fifth episode in The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series — A New Frontier, benefits in doing both, keeping the spotlight on Javi, Clementine & the players around them that matter for the vast majority of an emotionally resonant, stirring ending. A New Frontier’s strengths lie about how it approaches the concept of family through the dual lenses of Javi & Clem. In the upshot, the decisions I make as Javi, and to a lesser extent as Clem, have described not just the family I’ve assembled by episode 5, but finally just how much I have begun to care about them.

A Brand new Frontier marked me at the premiere episode by proposing Javi & making him empathetic to the point that I worried about the choices I made as him to protect Kate, Gabe, along with the others I met along the way. Sure, I am coloring inside the lines of Telltale’s story, but “In the Gallows” does an outstanding job of capitalizing on the choices made all season long, even as episodes 3 and 4 strayed from this stellar start.
